Unfortunately, its<br\/>main ingredient, cement, is not very environmentally friendly. For about 30 years,<br\/>construction researchers have been trying to find a material that would at least partially replace environmentally unfriendly cement, without losing the strength parameters of the resulting concrete. And so, by chance, they managed<br\/>to use microsilica, a by-product of ferroalloy production, to replace cement in<br\/>concrete production.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"264\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/mikrosilika-trade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2003\" style=\"object-fit:cover\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does microsilica work in concrete?<a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsilicafume.eu\/web\/properties%20of%20silica%20fume%20related%20to%20itsapplications\/1011306087\/list1187970075\/f1.html\"><\/a><\/h2>\n\n<p>When silica dust is added to concrete, nothing happens at first. As the cement and water in the mix begin to interact, the initial chemical reactions result in the formation of two chemical compounds: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Calcium hydroxide (CH) &#8211; free lime, a by-product that fills available pores,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) gel, which is responsible for the strength of concrete.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>According to the European Microsilica Committee, the addition of silica dust to concrete has a strong pozzolanic effect due to its exceptional suitability and very high amorphous silica content. Microsilica in the cement mix will increase compressive strength, flexural strength, bond strength and reduce the permeability of concrete. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Effect of microsilica on the mechanical properties of concrete<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Increased durability<\/h3>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:30%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"86\" height=\"52\" src=\"https:\/\/mikrosilika-trade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2006\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:70%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"277\" height=\"136\" src=\"https:\/\/mikrosilika-trade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2009\" style=\"width:300px;height:undefinedpx\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>As for the durability of concrete, the addition of <strong>microsilica increases the overall durability of concrete<\/strong>. Judicious selection of concrete mix components, including the percentage of silica addition, makes it possible to create concretes with high and very high strength. This increase in concrete strength is a result of the reduction of porosity by microsilica, which tightly fills the space between cement grains. The durability of concrete with microsilica increases over time. The best results are obtained after about 28 days 28 days after the concrete is poured.    <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water permeability and frost resistance<\/h3>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns wpisobrazy is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:13%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"119\" height=\"78\" src=\"https:\/\/mikrosilika-trade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2012\" style=\"aspect-ratio:4\/3;object-fit:cover\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:10%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"80\" height=\"76\" src=\"https:\/\/mikrosilika-trade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2015\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1;object-fit:cover;width:84px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"84\" src=\"https:\/\/mikrosilika-trade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-5-150x84.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2018\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"76\" src=\"https:\/\/mikrosilika-trade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-6-150x76.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2021\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Adding microsilica to the concrete mix causes a structural change in the pores, which <strong>increases the water resistance of the concrete<\/strong>. Reducing the permeability coefficient of concrete below the limit of 10-14 m\/s by adding microsilica up to 20% by weight of the binder, in the absence of fluxing agents, confirms the beneficial effect of silica dust on increasing the durability of concrete. Because microsilica protects concrete from the negative effects of water, it also protects against low temperatures. With a low water setting factor in concrete (0.25-0.30) and the replacement of 5-10% of cement with silica dust, an increase in frost resistance is observed.   <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chemical resistance<\/h3>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:30%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"125\" height=\"79\" src=\"https:\/\/mikrosilika-trade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2029\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"128\" height=\"77\" src=\"https:\/\/mikrosilika-trade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2032\" style=\"width:300px;height:undefinedpx\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Silica dust significantly increases the resistance of concrete to aggressive<br\/>sulfate-rich waters. Ms. Dr. Wieslawa Nocun-Wczelik in her book &#8220;Silica dust &#8211; properties and<br\/>application in concrete&#8221;, referring to the work of Mr. Whilea, Hicks, Yamato, Soeda and Emoto, states that in<br\/>concretes to which up to 30% microsilica was added, which <strong>significantly improved the resistance to<br\/>many acids, including hydrochloric acid, formic acid, lactic acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid and acetic acid<\/strong>.<br\/>The reason for their durability is the relatively lower calcium hydroxide content, combined with<br\/>packed, tight structure. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resistance<\/h3>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:30%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"97\" height=\"75\" src=\"https:\/\/mikrosilika-trade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-10.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2035\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"194\" height=\"93\" src=\"https:\/\/mikrosilika-trade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-11.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2038\" style=\"width:300px;height:undefinedpx\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>ACI (American Concrete Institute) in its article &#8220;Guide for the Use of Silica Fume in<br\/>Concrete v. 2012 reapproved&#8221; states that &#8221; <strong>The use of silica fume increases the resistance<br\/>electrical resistance of concrete<\/strong> as the amount of silica fume used increases&#8221; (subsection 5.4.1). <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other advantages of using microsilica in concrete production<\/h2>\n\n<p>The main advantages of using microsilica in construction are listed and described above. Other advantages include: <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Protection of reinforcement<\/h3>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:30%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"108\" height=\"81\" src=\"https:\/\/mikrosilika-trade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-12.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2041\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"173\" src=\"https:\/\/mikrosilika-trade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-13.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2044\" style=\"width:300px;height:undefinedpx\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Microsilica improves corrosion protection of the reinforcement, increases the resistance of the finished concrete product to water penetration, and promotes strength increase through secondary pozzolanic reaction. It also enhances creep and shrinkage in the concrete mix.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reduced abrasion<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"268\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/mikrosilika-trade.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/scieranie.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2054\" style=\"width:70px;height:undefinedpx\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Microsilica causes less abrasion of the concrete, which increases the hardness of the compact joint matrix and the adhesion of the grout to the aggregate.
